Sex addiction is thought to be a sign of moral weakness by our society. Because of this, most of us do not even wish to discuss the topic. We are either embarrassed or ashamed of such behaviors. People may view sex addicts as being morally repugnant and will label them as “perverts” or simply “weird”.
If you have ever tried to speak about sex addiction with your friends or family, you have probably been met with embarrassed looks or an abrupt change of subject. You may also have met with dismissive statements like “men are dogs”.
As a society, we are uncomfortable talking about sex in general. When it comes to talking about sex addiction, this discomfort only gets worse. I have met with spouses who have been so repulsed by the notion of their partner being addicted to pornography, that they cannot see it as addiction. Others have called it an excuse for moral depravity. They refuse to see how their partner’s behavior is addiction.
The result of this attitude toward sex addiction has been that this is the most isolated group of addicts. Resources are few and far in between, therapists who are trained in sex addiction are hard to find, and even medical professionals will sometimes dismiss it as only a bad habit.
Whether we refuse to talk about this problem due to embarrassment, or dismiss it as a perversion, we are really refusing to look at a painful but very real condition that plagues many families and relationships. In the age of the internet, we are especially vulnerable to becoming addicted to pornography, and other forms of cybersex.
If you or a family member is addicted to pornography, get help today. Find a counselor who is trained in Sex Addiction treatment to first get a detailed evaluation and Assessment and then formulate a plan for treatment and recovery.
